Dear Contour Mod Gods,
I need some advice. I am about buy the sho shop y-pipe, though I still have not made up my mind on alum or stainless. Anyway, while I am getting it installed, I would like to do something about this stock resonator issue.
Sho Shop has a high performance resonator, but it is $120. Does this sound expensive, I mean how good can it be? What are the alternatives that are cheaper (Magnaflow, Dynomax and size/model please)?
One final concern, the reason I am going this route is because I cannot afford a $600 cat back system (Brullen). The shop I spoke with expressed concern that if I want to do a cat back down the road, I should just wait and do it all together. Is this a legitimate concern. I want to try the y-pipe and new res first then do a catback if necessary. I do not want to screw myself by not having parts line up down the road.
Thanks in advance.
Oh one more thing ... what is the current lead time on a Sho Shop Y Pipe nowadays?

HELL YES! err... Yes that's expensive even for a stainless steel resonator. IIRC the prices ranges from $50-90 depending on make and model: Edelbrock, Magnaflow, SS Ultraflow 3. Roll your own exhaust. It's cheaper. No problem doing just a Y-pipe now and custom exhaust later.

Spend the extra and get the stainless. Aluminized is plenty good but stainless is better. Just remove the stock res and replace with a straight pipe. Excellent mod. The money you save from getting the aftermarket res will offset the price dif. betwen the alum and stainless y. If you have not done already, you may want to drop in a KKM or K&N open air filter as well.

Not the best idea to put str8 pipe in with Y-pipe.

Thanks for the comments so far. I am not looking for a loud exhaust, just better performance. Some rumble would be ok, that is about it. I think I should put something in place of the resonator, but I need to know what to put in (brand and model) and where to get it. Thanks.

Dynomax! Get it from Summit for around $30. Just as good as any other. Make sure it is not leuvered. Leuvers are little vents that stick up in the path of the air. It is good for sound deadening but bad for performance. As long as you have some kind of resonator in place with the y-pipe, the sound won't be too bad. Y-pipe + no resonator = RASP. That is rice material, NO GOOD. Good luck.

Any hints on what model number or size the Dynomax will have to be?
Thanks

Not sure about part #'s. The Summit website is very specific. I think the length is 16 or 19 inches and match the in/out diameters to whatever size exhaust you have. Good luck.

when you guys say "resonator" do you mean the catalytic converter ? or the resonators near the exhaust tips? Im also trying to collect info on exhaust setups.
I have a maxima, but i need a 5 speed.
