Can any of you tell me what KR means?

Post

I was thinking Knock Retard (Timing).

Trying to learn about these cars. I may pick one up in the next few months. Hoping for an all black Buick Regal GS

yeah i was looking into pulleys/exhaust/chip/etc. for my cousin's new GTP. I don't know wtf KR means either...I even searched the site/faqs for a definition of the term but didn't come up with anything. I didn't feel like registering for the site.

If your going Regal GS, try and find one with an Abboud package. It spices up the interior a bit as it's horridly boring inside.

Apperently in '01 or '02, they had a GSE package. Which I think had suspension and audio upgrades. I looked at getting one too. I'm going to buy my landlord's 1993 Lesabre for $1500. It's got 103k on the clock and in great shape. Only 170hp, but 220ft-lbs. I know it's a grandma car, but the contour needs some work and I'm not putting money into that thing. Plus, my back is getting worse in my old age. Supposed to be a bulletproof motor.

KR does infact mean knock retard. When the knock sensor tells the PCM it hears knock, the computer will pull timing from the ignition. GM 3800 S/C motors fight a lot with knock. Increasing the boost will cause more knock because the incoming air is hotter, and under higher PSI. Tuning is critical on these motors, they typically need reduced timing and lots of fueling to fight off the KR and harmful detonation. KR is so bad because it really hurts performance. Every degree of ignition advance is worth between 1 and 3hp. So, if the computer pulls 10* of timing, there goes 20-30hp. And the recovery from KR is slow, so it doesn't add the timing back in very fast. They usually hit KR right after a shift and then the second gear sucks because its slowly restoring the timing. And if you're seeing KR, you're very close to, if not detonating, which is very harmful. Hope that helps. I know the GM stuff a lot better than the Ford, I learned a lot about the PCM systems when I did all the work on the Grand Am.

Under "Newbie Zone" they have a list of most of the acronyms. The guys on this site are extremely knowledgeable about upgrades and modifications to these engines.
