OK. My '99 Contour is a fun car to drive, but its sound system is stock and lacks a lot (as we all know).

Anyway, I have been wanting to upgrade the stock gear for a while now, and think that I am ready. I do NOT want/need some of the killer systems that you all have here. I just want something that when I turn it up, I don't have to turn the bass way down to prevent distortion. I don't need heavy bass, just better sound.

I would like to start with the speakers and then upgrade the head later. It would be great to upgrade the speakers for less than $150 for all 4 (I said low cost, didn't I?!?!)

What are some suggestions? I have a decent pair (hardly used) of 4 year old 6x9 Pioneers that I keep wanting to make work, but these things are 3-way, and VERY deep, plus the metal cage around the back of the woofer is pretty bulky, so they really stick out a great distance which seems to prevent the door grill from fitting correctly. I would like to use them, but at this point I think that I am in for a new set of all 4 speakers.

Please help!

Thanks!

Any particular brands of speakers to stay away from? On the flip side, any lower cost (or eBay options) that are great for the money?

Thanks!

You can get some decent Pioneer (No, I'm not getting paid by nor am I a fan of them!) speakers at Walmart for about $50-$60 for a pair (so about $100-$120 total).

They sound ok straight off the head unit, but would be a lot better if you have a sub with em since they need more power than the HU puts out (hence, the low end blows)...

Spend your money on a quality HU first and go from there--and unless your rears are shot I wouldn't bother replacing them.

Oh geeze... didn't see that part!

Yes, aftermarket speakers on the factory HU are going to SUCK HARDCORE!

Spend the $150 on a name brand CD player of your preference. Examples of Pioneer, Awia, Blaupunkt, Sony, Kenwood, JVC, etc. Do not buy something like xtreme sound, roadgear, etc.

What do I do with the rears? Leave the factory ones, or disconnect the factory rears and just use the fronts (upgraded)?

As for some of the other questions, again, I am looking for low cost and better than factory. I don't need some of the awesome setups that you all have. I would love a sub, but that will have to come later.

Maybe a good head unit and fronts for now, but again, I need more info on what to do with the rears....
