i have a 96 mystique with the 2.0 liter and automatic, and a while ago it was doing the bang shift from 1-2 and then it did it really hard one time and it sounded like something broke, after that, when it shifted into overdive,it shifted really early at about 65-75 km/h, with rpm's at about 1750. when it shifted into overdrive it sounded like it was really lugging and the whole car would vibrate. about 2 weeks after all that, i was merging onto a freeway when all of the sudden the engine revved up a bunch, about 500 rpm more than normal, and continued to rev about 500 more than normal, also when it started doing the high revving thing, it would shift hard. about a week after that, it started shifting smooth and normal again, until it got to overdrive, where it would shift early and lug the engine. it stops doing the lugging thing and goes back to high revving when i have to accelerate hard, and then takes about a week to go back to normal. any ideas on what this might be?

Does you're Overdrive off light flash? If thats the case, its starting to sound like you're trannie is going to need to be rebuilt.

it did flash a while ago, when i had to replace the vss, but it hasn't since then. and the vss went about 30,000 km ago. and the weird lugging and slipping problem happened about 15,000 km ago, and the transmssion hasn't given out yet. the check engine light is on, but it's been that way since i bought it, and it will stay off for a while if the battery's been unplugged when i'm working on soemthing.

Get ready to buy a new tranny, mine was doing the same thing (CEL was on, turned off sometimes) car was shifting REALLY HARD and then i lost 1st and 4th gear..

what would cause it to switch between this lugging and slipping mode? soemthing electrical? i thought it would need a new transmission too, but it's been working the same for so long after i thought i broke it.

There are many possibilities of what could be wrong with your atx. Most likely rebuild time.

it has 235,000 km, but i doubt that this transmission actually has that many
