i've been thinking about getting an air compressor for the basement now that i actually have the space to start working on the '62 chevy p/u in my sig, as well as for miscellaneous other around-the-house tasks (filling car tires, using air pressure to clean dust off woodworking projects, etc.). i don't need (or more importantly have the budget for) one of the biggest 80-gal floor-standing units that can be hard-lined to various corners of the garage. however, i do want something a bit more stout than the weenie "pancake" style units. i've been looking at models in the $300 range, which gets me something in the 1.xx-2.0 continuous HP range and a tank in the 30-gal range at sears (craftsman) or lowe's (kobalt). i've been doing a little reading and apparently the non-"oilless" units are much quieter than the oilless ones, and given my neighborhood and basement acoustics, less noise = a good thing. anyone have any comments/recommendations that would help me out here? got a $125 gift card to lowe's from my dad for Christmas, so i could always apply that toward the purchase....hence my interest in the kobalt models. but, i can always use the GC for something else that i need and eliminate my shopping limitations....

I bought a Kobalt and returned it after it's first use. It's obnoxiously loud. I had to put it outside while I was using it and it was still too loud. I am also looking for a somewhat quiet compressor.

I have a Craftsman 30Gal. air-compressor and it works great. It's loudness is the same as every other compressor I've heard before.

I have the Craftsman 30 gal compressor. I just have it in a room away from where I'm working and run a long string of hose.

all things being equal, i'd rather give lowe's my business than HD. HD is much more convenient but the people in the paint dept were quite rude and moronic on multiple occasions, so as a matter of principle i'll use lowe's whenever possible. not that it matters to HD but it makes me feel better. besides, their husky line vs. lowe's kobalt vs. sears' craftsman = crapshoot as far as i can tell.

from what i can tell it's not the brand or size that makes the difference in sound - it's the type of motor (oil-less vs. oiled pump, belt-driven vs. direct-drive) that makes the difference. however, having only heard a few in person, i have no idea what the actual difference between one vs. the other would be. <shrug>
realizing i'm not going to find a truly "quiet" compressor - i'm just looking for a quietER compressor with good reliability/durability and good bang-for-the-buck.
seems like it's a six-in-one-hand/half-dozen-the-other type of choice between the major brands in my price range....just wondering if anyone had a preference for one vs. the other, or thoughts on size/HP-rating for common hobbyist use. not looking to over-buy for my needs but also not looking to buy something inadequate for what i want it to do....

for your price range, your not gonna get something quiet. just go to sears and buy a 6hp 33 gal for like $300 with some air tools. it will do everything you need it to, but will be obnoxiously loud. i should know, i have one. home depot usually has better tool packages with their compressors than sears does though, for the same price
