The improved pump came much earlier than that. My 98 E0, built in 4/97 had the revised pump. I changed it at about 80,000 miles just to be safe, and I still have the replacement pump in the car at 214,000 miles.
My original pump was one of the ones that had a loose baffle plate in the pump housing, so it was still a good idea to change it.
