I have the week off for the holidays and I decided to do some maintenance on the SVT. One thing is changing out the water pump for a new one.

I wanted a metal impellar water pump and ordered a new one from Ford. Now I thought the updated pump from them had a metal impellar.

I removed the water pump from the car and noticed the part number on the pump matched the new one I had just gotten from Ford. So for $hits and giggles I pulled the new pump apart and sure enough the impellar was plastic. Is there any place to get a metal impellar pump from besides BAT? It seems you can't get one from the Ford. Or is the water pump I have ok to use? I'm just worried about the impellar cracking and falling apart like all of the stories I've heard with these cars.

Save the money.

The revices white plastic impellar is as good, if not better than, the metal impellar. I have seen more metal styles leak through the shaft area, than I have heard of white failures.

now, either one can come completely loose and freespin, but that's another issue.

Don't jump on the metal impellar bandwagon, just because. You already have the white one purchased, and the car torn apart.. throw it on there.

be done with it.. you'll never have another problem with it.

Had a buddy buy a 98 SVT. Thought it might have a black impellar. Took it out and saw it had been changed for the cream. Just put it back in and took the purchased pump back. I have always ran the cream colored pumps. They're fine.

Be sure to remove thermostat and backflush system also. Hoses corrode and the small pieces of of hose will cause your water pump to leak at the weep hole in the water pump shaft. I went through about 5 water pumps in 6 months because of this problem.

I've got a '99, which came with the white plastic impellar. I've got 191,000 miles on the original waterpump so far, and I'm guessing its gonna last the life of the car.

Well FYI you should replace your water pump about every 60k. They are not made to last forever.

Thanks for all the help guys. I went ahead and used the case because of the loose metal disc on my old one. I did go out and buy a metal impellar pump from Napa for $66, however I did this before seeing your posts that the updated plastic impellar is fine. Anyhow I have that new pump sitting in the box the next time I need to replace one of these, which shouldn't be too long since there are two other Contours within the family.

I have a 2000 SVT with 170,000 miles on the original water pump. Are there any failures with the newer pump?

As stated just earlier... I can count the number of failures on white impellars (documented on CEG) on one hand.

170, 190, and 200K+ miles are NORMAL...

You SHOULD, however, flush your cooling system often... change your pump? not so much.
