My Contour is in the shop. The water pump went out which overheated the engine. Results: New water pump, timing belt, valve job. After it was put back together, I now get a 1381 CEL code. Has anyone run into this? Also like so many others here the temp gage reads between the A and L when running normaly. I hav replaced both the sender and the sensor. Any help will be greatly appriciated.

Variable Cam Timing Overadvanced (Bank #1)/ Misfire Detected - No Communication with BCM
It may be there is a wiring connector unplugged, or the cam timing is off. Check and see if the cooling fan comes on with the a/c (if it's not too cold for it below 45 or so.). That would verify low speed fan operation.

Cooling fan comes on around with a/c. It was checked and it comes on around 212 deg. The CEL came on around 4700 RPM. The engine kind of bucked a little bit but smoothed out right after that. It doesn't seem to be a constant problem. Thanks for the reply.

Do you mean the ECT and the guage sender?
The VCT problem is either going to be a gummed up VCT solenoid (from the baked oil) or an incorrectly installed timing belt. If it's not constant, try running a cleaner (like Marvel Mystery Oil) for awhile to clean out the varnish.

I am talking about the sender and the sensor that are in the housing with the thermostat. The shop wants to replace the VCT selonoid but I don't think that he is convinced that is the issue. How would I know if the timing belt was installed incorrectly. I did not have this problem before the overheating and the valve job. Is it possible that when he was rebuilding that the cam was placed incorrectly? Thanks for all of your help.

Yes, it's possible. I would let your mechanic do what he thinks next though (if not too costly)..

$350.00 (plus labor)for a VCT selonoid??? Thats what the shop told me. If we try and that isn't the problem, it can't be returned. The timing belt was rechecked and it is correct. We decided to try the Marvel Mystery oil and drive it for a couple of days and see if the code comes back. Will it hurt the engine to be driving around with this in the engine? How much should I add? It sounds to me that they don't know what else to try either. Any suggestions? Already have near $2000 into it for all of the work that has been done.

Replace 20% of the oil ~ one quart. Do not rev engine or drive hard. Marvel is oil so it's not like a solvent engine cleaner.
You can do some testing. Use an ohmmeter to verify that the coil is good. If it's bad you can just replace the coil. VCT connector is on top of the valve cover at front of engine. You could even jump power to the solenoid to see if idle suffers - but consult a wiring diagram.

Thanks again for your help everybody. Tried the Marvel Mystery oil. Still having the same problem though. Every once in a while as I start to accelerate, the enging kind of bucks and hesitates. It through the CEL on again. I have to believe it's the same code as before. The shop out here really is at a loss. I decided to take it back down to the city where I used to get my work done at. I have an appointment for Tuesday morning so we'll see what they say. What a way to stsrt the New Year. BTW, the hot water tank in the house went out yesterday,I hope the whole year isn't going to be this bad...
Happy New Year everybody.....

Just wanted to know if you ever got the car fixed and if you did what was the problem and what you had to do to get it fixed.
