Just got hit with the bill from the dealership for this.
Originally went in to get my muffler replaced (at Indy shop) and was told they wouldn't do it due to a fuel leak.

Dealership spent first day diagnosing the leak as a improperly connected fuel filter (I installed - I know it was on correctly). Ran across the street to fill up and look for leaks....nice stream coming out...over the exhaust pipe too.

Ran it back in and they kept it for a another 2 days.
Call from they said they found the problem after dropping the tank. Receipt also says this hose isn't even availabe anymore so they had to 'make their own' out of something else.
So...5 hrs of labor and $25 for a hose and the leak is fixed.

How common is it for this hose to have problems?

First thing I would suspect is they punctured it trying to lift the vehicle. I had one joint ruined the floor on my wife's Chevette with the lift when installing tires. No, I didn't buy the Chevette, she bought it before we got married.
I would look for lift damage because the fill hose and filter is very close to the lift point.
