I'm more worried about the clutch? What's that about? If both are in dire need of repair you have no choice? I'm sure you've let your grinding trans. go further than it should. You know it's only going to get more and more expensive if you don't have the internal parts repaired right? You pull the trans both things need to be repaired. Clutch AND transmission.

I'm more worried about the clutch right now because i don't have an unlimited supply of money. I'm 17 years old working at a gas station. I would have to work for 3 months to save up for a tranny rebuild. If i could buy a clutch, i could possibly get my brother to put it in for me.

Well if you're going to pull it off the engine at least take it to a shop for inspection. If you don't have the diff replaced it shouldn't be too bad. You could send it to Terry and at least have him just repair what issues you have. He used to charge about $300 to open it and then you have parts on top of that. Maybe have a couple sync's replaced and you could be good to go. If you're brother does all the work of just replacing the clutch and you put it all back together and it's grinding it's going to get pulled all over again. See where we are coming from?

Yeah, i'm not even sure if i want to go through with this. Maybe i'll just get what i can for the car, and go for something more reliable.

Have your brother read here if you decide to fix it?

What kind of reliable car are you going to find for $2500? Come on. The Contour is very reliable but if they are abused like any car you're going to have issues. It has 112k. A clutch is expected at least to 100k. It could last 200k+ like some here. I abused mine and clutch still looked good at 130k. It's hit or miss. It's much smarter if the engine has no issues to fix the trans than to get rid of it and get another POS car you don't know the history of. You aren't getting any $ on a car with a crap trans. I might spend $1500 on an SVT with a trashed trans but I know I can fix it in a weekend.

That is a limitless downward spiral.
But, if you can pull the tranny yourself, you'd save a lot on labor. Worth a shot if you have time but not money.
But, tranny stuff is expensive. The more you drive it, the more you'll break, and the more expensive it will be.
You could maybe pick up a cheap "new" tranny on Ebay and just remove and replace, at least for the short term. The box might be "suspect" but it might get you by. Or, it might be a waste of money and fail on you in another 30k.
Or, consider a bicycle. Seriously, not to be mean, but if you can't afford to fix problems as soon as they crop up, you're going to stay on this downward spiral with any car. Get something really cheap and start putting money in savings.

Yep. I had a 2.3L Mustang at 18. Paid $5200 for it and it only had 40k on the clock. Drove the heck out of that thing for 5 years and never had an issue other than a clutch. $1000 a year to run a car! Peanuts when you don't make much going to college.

"My" first car at 16 was a 74 Capri that my Dad paid $400 for. It was full of worn out stuff but when the driveshaft went, we dumped it and he got me a Beetle, then another when that one tanked. In college the second Beetle just got too expensive, so out it went. None of these cars cost more than $600. Finally got a scooter to get me around campus and the thing sipped gas and never broke down. Sold it when I was done with school, and spent the first year of my working life without motorized transportation while I paid down my credit card debt and started putting money into savings.
The first vehicle I actually paid my own earned money for was an 89 CRX Si that I bought from an acquaintance, and that was in 1990. I was 23 or 24. First "modern" non-junk car I'd ever had, and it didn't even have A/C, but I was ecstatic, and it was dead-nuts reliable and fun.
