One of my friends says that you will get better sound quality by mounting the tweeter of a component speaker with the woofer, as apposed to up on the sail panel thingy next to the mirror. I figure in the back seat that might be true, but i was under the impression that putting the tweeters up high was helpful in equallying the distance b/w the speakers and your ears, etc... Thoughts?

well... it's not quite that cut and dry folks. but yes, in most applications, it is better to have them seperated.

generally speaking, if you can have most of your sound coming from a single point, it will sound better. and in a car, this can be accomplished with either kicks or time alignment. barring those two, increasing the pathlength on tweeters does tend to help.

But in terms of imaging, spreading the sound infont of a listner broadens the sound stage.

but at the cost of diffusion. you don't see reference home audio systems with the tweeters on seperate stands a foot or more away. those tweeters are often sandwiched in between a pair of mids or otherwise very close to them.

as i said, moving the tweeters helps in a car audio app where kicks and/or time alignment isn't being used. but ultimately, it's a band-aid.

It helps raise the sound stage, but a good set of kick panels will also take care of that. The music should feel like it is coming from in front of you like at a concert.

As mentioned it is not a cut/dry question and has a lot to do with the car's interior and things more complex then most of us want to get into.

Getting Equal distance between Left and Right speakers in a car is what you are trying to achieve, by moving the Left tweeter up closer then the left mid certainly create some issues. If the speakers are on axis think about the distance from the left A pillar to your ear and then to where ever your mid would be placed, certainly not equal. And the right will certainly be longer. Units with Time Alignment can offset these flaws, but are usually quite expensive. Using seperate amps for L or R can compensate for this or adjust the balance slightly right to get a more centered "feel"

I am all for a well done kick panel or door arangement (or center channel)
