When I start my car in the morning (cold mornings here in Northern Indiana) the car searches RPM and will not idle correctly. It will shoot to 2000 RPM and then shoot down to 500 and almost die then shoot up again. I also have the CEL for enfine running lean. I have suspected the ECT sensor is bad for a little while because of another small problem that happens every so often. I am wondering if the ECT sensor could cause the engine to run lean. I searched and saw that it can cause it to run rich but did not see anything about being lean. Any help is great,
Thanks.

If it occurs all the time rather than just in the morning, my guess would be a massive vacuum leak.

Only happens in the morning. I am about 99% sure it is not a vaccum leak. If anyone thinks that the ECT sensor can cause these problems, let me know.
Thanks.

If you have a good scanner you can get the temp readings from the EEC in real time.

Well, I think I will just replace the ECT, since it is pretty cheap. But let me give all the symptoms so if this doesn't work, or someone can respond with an idea before I do the ECT replacement, I can do something else.
Once it got real cold here, in the mornings my car would be searching RPM, at idle in park. And sometimes die. But once in a gear other than Park or Neutral, the car would idle perfect. I had a CEL on, and the codes were bank 1 lean, bank 2 lean, and Torque Converter Clutch Control Error. The Torque Converter Clutch Control Error was something that had been bothering me every so often,(I had a post about this problem.) Transmission trouble, after driving for 45 minutes
Today the car acted different though. The car did the same thing as it did before in Park, but now it is not only in the morning like it was. And the car will do it also when in Drive. It will not die in drive but the RPM will get to about 250 and feel like it will die then jump up a little again. Also it will idle very rough, to the point the car shakes. GAS MILEAGE IS HORRIBLE also.
If anyone has any ideas, let me know. I need to fix this so I don't get stranded any where this winter.
Thanks a lot.

Not likely to be the ECT.
As mentioned, intake vacuum leaks is the most likely cause for the two "lean" codes.
The erratic idle is usually due to a flaky IAC valve.

Vacuum leaks will give you an erratic idle too.

Ok, I replaced the ECT sensor, didn't help the problem. Now today, I start the car it revs to 1500 and then dies. Still have the lean codes. Could this be the intake gaskets? Would it start then die like that? Or would the car stay started if it were just a vaccum leak like that? I need help!
Thanks.

I replaced my TPS on Saturday and that fixed a bunch of bugs. Idle is smooth all the time, no more hesitation when cold, and no more lean bank one/two CE lights! It was reading 730 or so ohms to 3.2K on the car so I replaced it. When I tested it on the bench it read normal - I hate intermittant problems. This is why the scanner didn't catch it during the KOER test, it was working at that moment. Funny, the new one read 400 to 3k ohms, the book says 300 to 6K. The car runs way better, that's what counts.

Also this only happens, when it is VERY COLD. It is 7 deg. today. Wouldn't a vaccum leak occur all the time? Another thing, is that the brakes are very hard to press today. I have to use a lot of force to depress them.
Any ideas on the brake thing? Could this all be tied together? I hate the cold weather it's time to move to FL.
