When I first installed my Wireless. I located 4 other signals from my apartment with out even trying. None of them were secure.

I use my neighbors connection on THIS computer the entire semester. For some reason my laptop is able to get my house connection, but not my neighbors and vica versa. I don't really care to be honest.

I used to, before I got my own rig, which is secured and hidden. But I'll tap into open signals whenever I can and need to. I'm not doing anything but simple browsing, so nyah.

How?

Anyone with a packet sniffer can get your WEP password by collecting enough packets (as little as 5 minutes if you are sending a lot of packets). MAC address locking is the same thing, every packet moving on your network has a MAC address listed along with it. Its not hard to spoof a MAC address. No broadcast SSID? Oh yeah, network stumblers will find them too...

For the record, any time I hop onto somebodys nework with out their permission, I try to find out who it is (pretty easy in my neighborhood) and let them know they should secure their network. Basically, I jump on to see if I can, then jump off.

If it were simple enough to run a switch and Cat-5 from their house/apartment would you do that, too?

Or would you patch into their cable TV signal, even though it's highly illegal?

All the same thing as far as I'm concerned.

I'm going wireless as soon as I've got my laptop up and running, then it's getting WEP'd, restricted to MAC addresses, and not broadcasting it's SSID. Call me paranoid, but, I pay good money for MY broadband, and don't want people hopping onto it.

Interestingly, however, I was working on a friend's laptop a few months ago, and found out there is a neighborhood wireless setup- designed to basically stick it to Comcast.
