I just purchased a 1998 SVT Contour with 57,000 miles. The car was delivered today, and when I drove it home, I noticed a grinding when I shift into third gear. Any suggestions, or possibilities?

Welcome to CEG, sorry to hear about your problem. More than likely you will have to replace the syncros, but you could try and change the fluid first and see if that will help any something like Mobil 1, Royal Purple, or Ford's Honey. Good luck!

Welcome to CEG Visit this part of CEG trans forum you will see the syncro problem is common. If you search that section, you will learn a lot about the MTX 75 transaxle. If it's a dealer, is there a guarantee??

Does anyone have an idea of how much it would be to replace the syncros? Or whatever the problem might be?

The cost of removing and reinstalling the transmission. plus the parts itself... I would install an LSD when you have it apart, as well... Absolutely asinine to fix it without installing that.

A little bit of a third gear synchro sloppiness or grinding is somewhat a normal charicteristic of this transmission. Before jumping into the trans itself, try changing the trans fluid and see how it behaves. Especially for this problem, you are best off using the Ford full synthetic "honey", but it is a bit pricy at about $20.00 a quart. You will need 2.2 quarts or 2.7 quarts depending on when the trans waqs built. If the car was built after 1/1/2000 it will take 2.2, otherwise it will take 2.7. I add 2 0z of Ford friction modifier to that on my car, but the latest advice from Terry Haines, the MTX75 geru, is to only add the friction modifier if needed.
Something else that may help, before spending the money on the Ford honey wuld be to try some Chrysler spec ATF+3 (without any added friction modifier, it already has a high level of it) and see how it shifts.
At the moment, my car has no third gear synchro problem although it did when it was about the age of yours. The Ford honey seems to have resolved it.

So this "Ford Honey". Is that the real name of it, and what part stores carry it. I just don't want to walk up to them and say "Hey do you have the Ford Honey Transmission Fluid?" and look like an idiot.

Go to a Ford dealer.
