Did not find a removal/install how to for ATX. some have mentioned removing engine and trans together(from above I take it), is that the prefered way? Can the trans be removed by itself/ From under?
My trans appears to be fried (see troubleshooting)so any sugestions (and gifts of money!?)would be helpful.

Yes, the tranny can be removed through the bottom by - getting the car high enough in the air, so that you can get the tranny out from under the car, attach an engine support to the engine and remove the subframe.

An awful lot of work when you can just pull them both from the top. But opinions vary, so do what you think is the easiest for you.

Thanks
I need to hear others experience with this to help me gauge whether I can do it myself or not and how.
Wish I could just pull them both and put a low mile 3L/ATX combo in. But thats adding alot onto an already taxing situation.

I'd also be interested in opinions on this, as I am getting ready to pull mine. Dropping the subframe and all the work that goes with it sure sounds like a lot of work. It might be different if you had a nice shop with a lift and air tools, blah blah blah. But those of us who work in the driveway with hand tools are in a different world. That under-car stuff is a killer.

Anybody done it both ways? Which is smoother?

When in doubt...

Some chain, a come-along, and a thick tree or sturdy rafter supports.

I've pulled both from the top. Not that hard.

Does the engine have to come out too, or can just the trans be pulled out(from the top)?
