I like JVC for the level they are as well. I have JVC rack components that are 15 years old and work as good as new (I wish I could still buy a 6-CD cartridge changer).
That said, most net projection TV's have auto-aligning bulbs, whether LCD microdisplay (DLP) or not. My older school CRT Hitachi has it.

Thank You! I used to work at Best Buy and I couldn't understand why people wouldn't buy a service plan on the big items. I got an Advent 27" flat screen tv for $400 or so about three years ago. When I went back in July I found that when you turned on the tv it would crackle, then it finally went and the tube poped. I took it in to BB and because they didn't have the tv anymore gave me a new Sony Wega 27" flat screen; I gotta say it was well worth the investment and yes I did buy another psp for the Sony.

Do you really think they offer extended warranties because most products break? Nope. It's another money generating scheme. If there is a real concern about your piece of electronics breaking, then save the money for that rainy day. Out of all of the electronic components I own, I would have lost money if I would have bought extended warranties. I have a Mitsubishi 55 inch diamond series TV. Owned it for three years and it has been trouble free. I would recommend it to anyone. Excellent HDTV. The cost of the warranty would be more than the cost of a single repair. I'd be willing to bet that if one was able to look at the books, Best Buy, Circuit City etc are cleaning up on extended warranties. And why? Because these places are betting on the fact that the electronics are a lot more reliable than they lead the consumer to believe.

My 10 year old Sony 32" and my 10 year old Sony audio equipment has never given me a problem and I didn't waste my money on an extended warranty. Actually, that goes for every piece of electronic equipment I own. I laughed when the Best Buy cashier tried to sell me a warranty for my PS2 controller the other day.
I did buy an extended warranty for the SVT, and it turned out to be a waste of money because I never had to use it.

See.. I knew this. It's one of the biggest money makers for Best buy and CC. And even if your product breaks, what about the 10 other products that dont? This greatly outweighs the price of the one repair.
That is why I have never gotten the warranty before. But the question I pose with the lamps seems to make me want to consider it.

correct. they wouldn't sell them if, on average, they didn't generate revenue. and as someone who has worked in that retail industry, i can tell you they generate HUGE profits. i'd say less than 15% of all warranties purchased ever have to pay out. save the money you'd spend on them in a seperate account and see what happens.

Problems: LCD: Dead/Broken Pixels & Contrast range Projection: Bulb replacement & alignment (non DLP) Plasma: not 100% sure on the exact problem, but i dont believe they last very well... i think the gas "wears out" or soemthing...
Yes this TV I am getting automatically alligns the bulb. you simply pull it out and replace it from a side access hatch. But the bulbs alone are around $200. And I'm thinking if I blow 2 of these over a 4 year span, the extended plan pays for itself. Just wondering what people have experienced.
I would never get a plasma. They are only good for about 4-5 years and then their brightness fades by something like 15-20% every year after that. And that is only if they are mounted perfectly level and straight. If they are not, then the life expectancy is even less.
I don't know where people get this crap aboust plasma's lasting 4-5 years... My Panasonic plasma has a half life of 40,000 hours. I repeat 40,000 hours. That means that after 40,000 hours of operation your brightness would be half that of when you bought it. And at the rate that we watch tv it would a very long time before you "needed" to replace it. I have my screen on for about 21 hours a week - so if you do the math it will take 36 years for my plasma to wear out.
The only reason to mount them "level and straight" is to keep them from falling off your wall. These screens don't care how they're orientated.
The "plasma gas" doesn't "wear out" - at least not anytime that I will see it in 36 years of ownership. The gas doesn't leak out or need to be "recharged".
I don't mean to jump on anyone's case about this but the above mentioned comment is flat out wrong. If you like the set that you're looking at then get it and with the warranty. But bear in mind that the picture you see in almost any projection tv will fade when viewed from different angles. They look great when seated at the correct height in front of the set, but stand up or walk around and it will wash out. That's why I chose a plasma... Because no matter what angle I viewed the screen from you could see perfectly.
Just my opinion.

I am another believer in extended warranties. However, I will only buy from places where the warranties are refunded if it is not used. My appliances and my electronics are all purchased under this sort of plan.

i'll take picture quality over viewing angle issues any day. i'm still not overly impressed with the pic quality of plasma and lcds yet. so far, no replacement for crt's and tubes. not to mention most modern DLP RPTV's don't have that narrow of viewing angles these days.

buy the warranty and let your tv mysteriously die right before the warranty goes up. Use your new best buy credit to get a new TV and buy a new warranty. Start the cycle over.
