for a while now, i've had some vibration issues with the engine/atx. the degree and feel of the vibration is always the same and occurs during the following events:

1. stopped, upon shifting into reverse from either neutral or park. vibration remains until another gear is selected, even while backing up.

2. coasting, in drive (o/d on or off) at around the 2k rpm zone, ~45 mph. vibration smoothes out as rpm/speed drops.

for #2, there are no hard thresholds for the vibe. the max intensity of the vibe occurs as #2 describes.

the car is very driveable and there are no other problems besides the bang shift, which is still going strong. atx response is solid, power application is solid.

my gut tells me my atx is trying to communicate its intent to die soon...

honestly war, i have no idea. it's noteworthy that you raise this point, because tony and some others raised "the atx mount" question in my bang shift thread.

the car has lived it's entire life in the elements. it's a '98 with 103k.

2 yrs hawaii
1 yr las vegas
5 yrs atlanta

so the weather and temps have been quite varied, if they have an effect on mount life.

are there some simple checks i can do without (much) disassembly to check mount condition? how many mounts are there (including the atx)?

It usually communicates with a CEL or OD flashing light but it does not appear to be happening in your case. Maybe btrautman or unisys can chime in with their experience on this. The vibration issue is very prevalent with the Zetecs but I haven't read any (yet) besides yours for the Duratec.

Edit. This ATX rebuild thread has a good description of where the mounts are. Towards the end, CPW and btrautman posts about the mounts. Good luck.

One mount is noted to fail, letting the trans set on the frame. That will vibrate, and can chew the trans housing. If I remember right, it't the driver side mount, near the wheel well.

Telling us year and engine type would help.

The early Zetec (95 to 97) didn't do a very good job of controlling engine vibration and harshness, especially at or near idle.

My 96 zetec vibrates when in drive at a stoplight. If i shift in into neutral I't goes away. It's a little anoying but I'm used to it. If its the tranny mount and I let it go could I cause damage to the tranny?

Try as you may you may never get rid of it. No, it is not harmful in your case, it is somewhat a natural condition.

98 Duratec.

On a Duratec I would liik hard at the mounts for this problem.
