Hey guys... Tonight I got home, sat in front of my computer and noticed this message.
"windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windows\system32\config\system
you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the origional cd-rom select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"
So thats what I tried to do. But when I try to start windows with the disc it freezes on a blue screen with "windows setup" at the top and a white bar at the bottom.
I have nothing important on this HD so I dont mind wiping everything out. But I dont know any other way to do that other than using the CD wich freezes up while its loading.
I know the disc is good because I just used it last night on a friends computer. Its WinXP Pro by the way.
Its a new computer that I just built a couple weeks ago. Here are the basic specs... if they help.

I just bought this fuggin HD... I called the place I bought it from and Im taking it by there on Saturday but I'd rather not have to go through all that trouble if I can fix it myself. They said if its a hardware problem they will replace it but Im pretty sure its a boot virus... therefore I will have to pay to have it wiped out or buy another HD.

Put the XP CD in the drive and boot to it. THen press R to enter Recovery Console when you have the option to.
Now type cd system32\config
ren system system.old cd \ cd windows\repair copy system c:\windows\system32\config
Exit
Your computer will restart
See if this helps

It never gives me an option to type anything. It freezes right after it says "press F2 to run automated system recovery".

I'd just reformat.
Honestly, I do it almost every 6 months or so... just to keep things working at peak speed. Only takes me about an hour and a half to do a full reformat these days. I got all my installers backed up and all the windows updates on cd's, lol!
Edit: By the way, a really cool utility for windows that i have started to use when I gotta do work is the UBCD for windows. http://www.ubcd4win.com/

Im not trying to restore it. I just want to wipe it all out but it freezes before it gets to the prompt to format and partition. Actually it freezes before it gets to the licence agreement.
I got the HD from a local computer store called "The Computer Place". I just wanted something small to run the OS on.

So... skip the CD booting.
boot normally.. but in to DOS mode, instead of Windows (where it would lock, normally)
Format your harddrive, using the parameter for the boot sector (bye bye virus, if you have it) THEN reboot.. insert CD and see if it loads.
