could a third gear grind be caused by poorly adjusted clutch or shift linkage. Just wondering.

Highly doubtful. You have a 6 year old car. I'm guessing over 80k miles. Time for new synchro.

third gear grind could indeed be caused by a misadjusted shiftlinkage, but not by the clutch. if the clutch wasnt disengaging all the way it would cause a hard shift in all gears. on our trans 1, 2, 3 all have double synchros, so it probably is you synchro. i have a hard shift into second sometimes. but mine has 208000 miles on it so mine is almost definatly the synchros. try adjusting your cables first and if that doesnt change anything then you know its internal.
it could also be the a bent shift fork. does it ever pop out of third?

And it would have hard engagement in all gears, as you went on to state, if the cables were out of alignment. Haven't heard of anyone bending a shift fork in an MTX-75.

almost 80k, but the tranny has less than 20k. It was rebuilt with the "revised" one snap ring syncro, from what I can gather. Just hoping. Thanks sirs.

Uh oh! That's why. Single style instead of the twin. Go to any Focus forum and ask them how great the revised single is. Who told you to put that in? A dealer? Take it back!!!!!!!
