I had a strange experience with my 1996 2.0L ââ?¬Ë?Tour on my way to work this morning. After making a brief stop to purchase a copy of the daily news paper all of a sudden the vehicle started to misfire badly, so bad that it triggered a CEL & I was forced to stop & switch the engine off. After a brief time I restarted the engine & to my surprise the miss disappeared. When I got home I connected my scan tool & it indicated that the CEL was triggered due to a misfire in #3 cylinder. I also notice that there is a distinctive miss when the vehicle is in park & idling, however, it idles fine in drive & when driven there is no noticeable problem. Finally from time to time I experience a very low RPM at idle 500 RPM instead of specified 750-800RPM. Any suggestions/solutions regarding these problems will be greatly appreciated.

Bad gas, spark plugs or spark plug wires.

Take a look at the #3 and the other spark plugs, wires and coil pack. Look for cracks or carbon tracks (black marks). Try some fuel injection cleaner in the gas tank.

I had to replace my plugs as one had carbon tracks as well. Insure you get a good quality double platnum plug, don't go cheap. They don't work.

For a misfire code?
As the others have stated, look at the ignition system first, especially the plug wires.
While you are checking the plug wires, make sure that the spark plug well isn't full of oil causing the plug wire to short out. If it is, you need a new valve cover gasket as well as plug wires and possibly plugs.
