I am looking to build some custom interior parts, ie: console, headliner, rear-seat delete, and the plan was to use use fiberglass, but I got to thinking about it and am wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to use carbon fiber in the same way as fiberglass.

I am not concerned about retaining the "carbon-fiber" appearance, the parts will be painted when finished, it is more a concideration for weight/strength reasons.

Tried Googling for how-to's in regards to working with carbon fiber, but without much success.

My basic understanding is: if you want it to look right...have a proesional do it.

You on the other hand aren't concerned with apearance....however, is the additional cost of cf vs weight savings out weight just doing it in fiberglass?

There are several good books on amazon.com.

I just bought a couple of them

Fiberglass & Composite Materials: An Enthusiast's Guide to High Performance Non-Metallic Materials for Automotive Racing and Marine Use

Competition Car Composites: A Practical Guide

But in the basic sense.. CF is basically the same as making a fiberglass part... just more expensive materials.

AMEN!! I had a guy that did carbon fiber stuff for boats once CF my rear valience where it is black in CF because I had cut bigger openings for my dual dual-tips. Well, lets just say it has since been literally ripped off by yours truely. It was horrible after a few weeks. Started seperating and the top coat was starting to yellow.

I would love to try it but I'm not in that business, so I leave it professionals.

If we left everything to the professionals then this site would either be full of professionals or full of people paying someone to do every single thing to their car.

Do it yourself.. you might learn something.

This is true, but there would be no work for anyone if everyone did it themselves... I guess it swings both ways. If I had the money to replace it if I screw up, then I would, otherwise I'm happy with professionals to some degree.
