I had my codes read ar Autozone. They told me I had a P0340 and a P0171. I have just changed my timing belt. I am sure that I had #1 and 4 at TDC and I used a peice of thick angle iron to align the cams. I don't think I did anything wrong.

I have a 96 2.0 ATX. I know the engine is good, but it sure is running awful.

This is driving me crazy!

P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit (Bank 1 or single sensor)
P0171 Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1

I know what the codes mean I just don't know what to do about them.

Could the CPS not be the problem?

The P0340 indicates a problem with the Cam position sensor.

The P0171 is likely a vacuum leak.

Neither indicate a CPS problem.

How do I test the sensor? I tested the wiring and get over 12v coming in.

I've gotten the p0171 lately as well, I just had my K&N cleaned at a shop.... do you think that I should just check the seals around the filter? Or would the leak be somewhere else?

I looked around for an obvious vacuum leak, but could not find one. What is the best way to detect a leak? Does anyone know how to check the Cam Pos Sensor?

carb starter spray in different areas will cause the engine to idle differently if its ingested in through a leak.. obviously, stay away from the air filter, as that will ingest it automatically, and give you a false positive for a small leak elsewhere.

I going to show my inexperience here with my Contour. Boy did I goof myself up.

I tore apart everything to adjust the timing again. Put it all back together and low and behold, nothing. It seemed that the car was running on 3 not 4. So I started to check fuel injectors. #4 was not working. It was not getting any power to the injector. I started trouble shooting it and ended up at the PCM. Something was fishy though, the wire colors on #4 weren't matching the schematic! I had been messing around there and found that the plug on the injectors is the same plug on the Camshaft Position Sensor. I had them swapped.

Needless to say she is running like a kitten and I now have no codes!

Boy do I feel dumb! Be careful not to do that!
