Has anybody ever had the idea of installing an aircraft radio scanner linked to their audio sys? I've been dabbling around the idea. I know nothing about car audio. And yes, I searched.

I've been really wanting to do this.

Look, I know it's odd. But I would assume it would be a similar setup as you would put a ham radio into your car. I only wnat to link it to te car's sound sys.

im sure if you found the scanners speaker harness and somehow sliced it into the cars audio system, just tying in the scanners speaker setup with the cars, im sure it could be done...but how...hmmmm

Why do you need to connect it to the stereo system? It's gonna be next to impossible unless you get a mini audio mixer and use an external audio amp, 'cause you can't just connect the scanner and the stereo to the speakers at the same time. You'd want to run the line-level audio from a head unit and the audio output from the scanner into separate channels of a mixer, and then run the output from the mixer into your external audio amp.

If your scanner has too small of a speaker, you could just get a larger one for a two-way radio or CB and mount it under the dash or something. Another thing you could do is use the front speakers for the stereo and connect the rear ones to the scanner (after disconnecting them from the stereo.)

But I think I'll like it.

But I'm also worried about the sound quality. Well, that's relative. Aircraft radio transmissions are as grainy as they could be. Squelch control barely helps it. But, anyhoo.

What I'm worried about is putting a monaural system to a stereophonic system. Would sound just come from one side? Or is there a mono connection?

If I'm not mistaken I think radio shack sells a "mono to stereo" plug. They may also have the fm transmitter there as well.

If you want a temporary fix, you can use the old casstte adapter. The one that plugs into the headphone jack on the scanner (cd player) and the other end is a cassette that goes into the player. That would give you an idea of sound anyway. And yes Radio Shack does carry these items.
