With the 2002 SVT Focus coming out with a Getrag 6-speed manual attached to the Zetec, I wanted to know if we would be able to shoehorn that gearbox into our 'tours with Duratec engines and MTX's. I like my MTX--it's far more forgiving than the Mazda 5-speed in my '94 Probe (I can turn corners in 4th with the 'tour, as opposed to 2nd in the Probe). But, like the Probe, my 'tour feels like it wants a sixth gear, especially on the highway. So, I wanted to know: Could the Getrag be made to work? Exactly how much modification would be required? Bellhousings, clutches, flywheels, shift cables, driveaxles, the list goes on. Certainly SOME of these parts bolt straight up. Of course, those with Zetec engines would have an easier time of it.

The getrag 6-speed won't fit with the duratec, also it doesn't have torque ratings high enough to really warrant doing such a swap.

The Getrag wont handle the power of the Duratech. You may want to check out the Quaife website ,they do have some 6 speed FWD boxes.

Why is everyone so hot on a 6-speed anyway????

What could it honestly do? Other than provide an additional overdrive gear?

The MTX-75 has a pretty good setup as far as gear ratios go anyway.

Are people that hung up on "bigger/more is better"? oh well.

more gears = less rev drop between each gear

why do you think there are 18 wheelers with 18 and 21 speed trannies

this way you can keep the engine within its power band between gears rather than having to go to red line inorder to remain in the power band when you shift

from what I read so far the getrag 6 spd is a POS

cant handle enough power to warrant any major mods to the SVT focus engine

they soulda stuck witht the MTX-75

They used the 6-speed to keep the peaky 4-cylinder in it's power band better.

It would likely slow down the duratec with it's flat power curve when you include the extra shifting needed.

The current MTX-75 keep it above 5100-5200rpm already... Well within it's power curve IMO.

well, first I am well aware of the nature of a gearbox and close-ratio gearboxes. But the Contour w/ the MTX-75 is well within its peak power band on every shift. Another gear would simply add an extra shift in there somewhere.

second, the SVT Focus engine is far from "peaky" for a 4-cyl, w/ 85% of peak torque at like 2200 rpm and a flat tq curve pretty much all the way to redline.

third, how in the he11 can anyone make a judgement about whether the SVT Focus 6-speed is a POS?? Its likely no-one on here that has even remotely made a comment about the box has ever seen one, driven one, or broken one. The only thing anyone has to go on, is the rated specifications for it. These specifications were designed around the output of the SVT Focus engine, so how could it be a POS if it meets exactly what it was designed to do?

Its kinda like people getting pissed in Vietnam about the F-4 Phantom not being that great in a close dogfight and not having a gun. Use something other than what it is designed for, and it may not work perfect, and may require modification to meet the need.
