I finally installed the SHO Shop Y pipe with cat the other day. Just like everyone else says, the factory pipe is a heavy beastmonger smile The next day I took it to a local exhaust guy to weld it up, muffler clamps should not be a permanent way to hold the exhaust. While they were under there I also had them put in a 2 1/2" resonator and piping all the way back to the rear Y where they tied in the pipe. I decided to try leaving the rest stock.
The car has a extremely deep tone with zero rasp. When I'm at a constant throttle it doesn't have much drone. It is fairly loud, for stock muffs in the back.
What surprises the most is how responsive and powerful the car feels at low to mid range rpm's, compared to stock though.
What do you guys think about this setup? I just thought about experimenting a little before doing the whole exhaust to see what differences can be had. I think that for people that want to save money or can't afford lots of extras this is a nice improvment.

That sounds like a sweet setup. My Y-Pipe and Cat are on order and I should get them in the next week. How much did the resonator cost you and how much did the piping cost you, if you don't mind me asking??

That's my exact setup!!! I have 2.5 until the stock rear split, and a SHO ypipe w/ cat. I did the ypipe first, and about 4-5 months later the 2.5" piping. The piping made a nice difference, but I'm not sure if it's as much as the ypipe. I eventually pulled out the two rear mufflers... laugh I love it. It was a little too quiet w/ the two stock mufflers in, but I live at high altitude. I recently went to lower elevation and my car was considerably louder.

The setup minus Y pipe cost me $170 bucks, aluminized. The resonator was about $30-$40 I belive. It's basically a glass pack. There are alot of other resonators out there that have much better flow dynamics.
I just had them throw something up there in place of a straight pipe.
I'm sure you can find a place that would do it cheaper than I had it done but, make sure they do it right. I personally would rather spend a little extra for a perfect job, and the fact that this place does all the exhausts for a tuner shop doesn't hurt either laugh
I really like the way the car sounds and drives. This way you don't have to do the entire exhaust all at once. Plus the rear splits into two pipes on the SVT so, it's not like it's completely restrictive if left stock.

Derk, what kind of mufflers did you use and how do you like them?
I am considering the 2 1/2" DYNOMAX Race Magnums. I think the obnoxious noise level should be a minimum with the resonator and cats in place. Nothing for sure yet though.

I have a 2.5" (obviously) 12" long straight through Bullet brand muffler in place of the res. Don't know where to find those anymore. Got it through carparts.com. I'm probably going to get two 12" Vibrant mufflers for the rear once I get my headers laugh. It will probably be too loud w/ the headers on. We'll see.
Right now, as it is, it is sweet sounding from 0-4K, then from 4k-4300 or so, it's loud, and from then on, it's too fast to notice laugh
I'm glad to see another SVT w/ 2.5" piping.

Even with the cat and two straight thrus you're gonna be loud and raspy when cold. I had a hiflo cat, dynomax bullet (res) and dynomax bullet (muffler) and it was LOUD AS HELL!!! eek eek

I'd say use at least a 2 chamber muffler, or louvered design straight thru. If you don't want loud that is.
