1998 Contour LX 2.0 . I just replaced the temperature sensor that hooks up to the temperature gauge, now the gauge works again, however, now when I drive it the gauge goes all the way up to the red. I turned on the A/C while I was driving and the gauge dropped down to normal. When I got home I let it idle and the fans came on. Is there something that I am missing? Is there some way to make the fans come on sooner without turning on the A/C?

What temp on the gauge did the radiator fans turn on at? I am assuming you were idling(without a/c)?

The temperature gauge in this car doesn't have numbers. It's more like a glorified idiot light with white on the left, red on the right and reads "normal" in between. The needle was just about at the red and, yes, the A/C was off. When I was driving home that night it was so cool that I don't believe it should never have gotten to the red while I was driving unless something was wrong. Shouldn't the needle stay about in the middle of "normal" (more or less) when driving at normal speed on a level freeway with the outside air temperature at 70 degrees or less. I did notice a slight bulge in the hose right at the front of the thermostat (where I had to disconnect it to access the sensor to replace it) but this may be normal for all I know because I really never payed attention to it before. I don't even know which way the coolant flows. If that is into the thermostat then maybe the thermostat wasn't opening? The temperature gauge hasn't worked for probably 8 months or more so I don't know if this car has been running hot for a long time or not. Heck, I don't even know if it's really hot or the gauge is just wacky. I usually only drive this car a couple of weekends a month and mostly on the freeway for about an hour at a stretch. -Dan

At idle, where on the gauge did the fans come on?? Also, does the needle sit far left when the car is off? If it doesn't, the reading would be offset.
