Thanks alot people. Looks like alot of different opinions, but for the most part seems I should just stick with the regular old air filter. One of these centuries they may decide to pave some more roads down here

the K&N is a great overall performance filter. You should be careful cleaning it though. Brushing it or using compressed air can open up holes in the cloth allowing dirt to get into your engine. I haven't cleaned mine yet. The previous owner had just put a new one on before i bought the car. i'm not looking foward to it. Check out this link if you want to know more about the K&N: http://www.contour.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=perf&Number=1090904&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=all&fpart=1&vc=1

I have been using Fram and Puralator, and it seems that the Fram filters more dirt than the Puraltator. For $7 for a regular filter, I can't justify spending $40-something on a K&N. Plus, it is so much easier to just pop the tabs, pull out the old one and throw it away, and drop in the new one.

Is there any proven dyno charts that show that the aftermarket filters flow better than the stock paper ones ?
Also with the tendency of the intake tract to get gummed up (IAC, manifolds), I'd shy away from oiled up k&n's and just stick with the oem paper filter ... The filter is big enough I can't see it being a bottleneck.

Well, it is possible to increase or at least maintain the volume of air passing through an air filter that is made of a more restrictive material by increasing the surface area.
In the context of this discussion, the K&N definitely is not made of a more or equally restrictive filter element than paper.
