Well, didn't exactly blow clean tonight. Blew a 458 vs a limit of 150 in hydrocarbons, and blew a 4.81 vs. a limit of .70 in CO %.

Needless to say, I think the SVT needs to be looked at.

Those are some seriously high numbers. I think from previous discussions on this topic, high HC's are due to a lean A/F ratio, but I could be wrong.

I should have noted that the numbers are at curb idle. She was fine during the other portions of the test.

Both numbers would seem to indicate combusion inefficiency. High hydrocarbons usually indicate some gas getting through, which might indicate plugs and wires, or O2 sensors. I lean towards it being the latter. It could also be the cat, in which case, here comes the mystery mod!

I'll probably end up getting it looked at by a pro instead of throwing parts at it.

Let us know what you find out because I know in my case I am still looking to find out why I blew over last year.

A thought:

I had a bad rear bank downstream 02 sensor. Bad in that the wires were hanging down and reagged on the ground, derstorying the connectors. Rollie at Campbel Ford took a reading and said that the Front upper 02 sensor was bad. I took a new Denso sensor to my mechanic (no time to do it myself at that point.) He screwed up and put the new front upstream sensor in the rear downstream spot, and the light went out, everything was fine.

Could this be causing the issue. As I type this, I am thinking that, oh yeah, that's gotta be it.

Thoughts?

My car is gone and sold...but I just had to comment on this. What a bunch of tools at Campbell Ford. Was that in the fastlane Phil? they did the exact same thing with mine when I brought it in. I even drew a picture so they wouldn't screw it up. I popped the hood when I picked the car up and sure enough, the old O2 was still there. I don't think they know the difference between upper and lower bank...

Naw, it was my usual guy. He works out in the wilds on Sale Barn Road. I described it carefully, but he still did it wrong.

I am surprised that you have had problems with the Fast Lane guys at Campbell Ford, as they have always been excellent for me. Perhaps you got the wrong guy: Rollie is great, going so far as to offer to lend me his O2 sensor wrench if I decided to do the job myself. Really nice guy.

High HC, sounds like as was said before. Bad plug, wire or something.

A friend of mine blew over way high on HC. Found a loose plug so the one cylinder had incomplete combustion and was sending the rest out the tail pipe.

I just had mine done today. I was worried since it's at 200K and when I got it had a blown head gasket. I ran through some good block sealant and replaced plugs (originals), wires (originals), filters, etc. Thing blew highest % was .01. NOX and HC were both single digit. I was surprised, although the garage has a TV hooked into the test machine and you can watch the test as it is running. Too bad I have to wait until Monday to get plates now.
