So since I've moved to Vienna I have started smoking but only when I am around my friends at Uni and in bars/clubs. When I am at home I have no desire for a cig, even going 5+ days without one. My worries now are that I will really start smoking outside of social situations and also for my health. Anyone have any advice for quitting before I develop a life long habit? How do I break the mental connection between being around people and smoking? I have looked around but I cannot find anything for social smoking, just to quit.

Best thing is just to quit. Sorta hard I guess. Just when you want one, don't. (I know how it is, I sometimes smoke around friends and used to smoke all the time)

COLD TURKEY! Thats the only way to quit. Been there, done that. Sure its tough at first when you are in those social settings, but you just have to have the will power to resist the temptation. In time it will be easier and easier to resist the urge. GOOD LUCK.

I'd start weighing the longterm and shortterm benefits of the two.

Smoking socially, and your health..

Which is more important?

personally, if I didn't have the will power to avoid it.. I'd avoid the situations. just like girls.. if you can't seem to keep from straying, the easiest thing to do is stay away from other women.

Stay out of the bars/clubs for a while. Try hanging out at home with them. I think once you sit down and think about the future and your ultimate goals, you'll see which of those two is worth the effort..

Thanks, I've tried. I know cold turkey works but having the will power is the real problem for me. Any mental tricks or just a mind set? It is not like the US, everyone smokes in bar and clubs; there is no place you cannot smoke. And at Uni eveyrone smokes so it is really hard to resist. I will try my best, thanks again guys!

try chewing gum, works for me. i like orbitz, the original in the blue pack. i chew it while drinking; beer, drinks, shots... the peppermint's not bad with any flavored drinks.

I drink enough without trying to quit so I have a feeling this might get me into trouble

I'll try the gum thing and let you know how things go.

Haha.

The gum may help but it's not really an answer. You really have to just quit.

That's tough, Sean. I have a few friends that only smoke in social situations. I can't, for the life of me, understand that. But anyways...when you're out at a bar, grab a stirring straw and hold on to that and chew on it if you need to. That may occupy the areas of your consciousness that tell you you should be holding onto something and/or have something in your mouth.

...or you could advocate fascist smoking bans, like Lincoln has.
