Last Monday I was going out to lunch turned the key and my 2000 V6 Manual Contour didn't start and made a grinding noise. Waited and then tried again with same results. Third try, it started. Started for a week and then this morning same thing, but this time it wouldn't start and grinded. Tried 4 times. Is it my starter? Seems my battery is ok since lights, etc. turned on. What could it be? Where is the starter located? I may after work try to tap it and see if it ignites it. Please help me. Thanks.

Firstly:

its the starter, most likely. Replace it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Secondly..
to alleviate the grinding for NOW..

leave the car in gear, rock the car from front to back until the car hits the stop (from being in gear) a few times, then start it.. it should seat the teeth better and buy you less grinding (which is damaging to the flywheel, and is EXPENSIVE to replace that..)

so.. avoid grinding as above.

replace ASAP to avoid flywheel replacement.
check flywheel teeth when replacing for tooth wear

EDIT: rocking the car is not the way to avoid buying a new starter.. it is temporary, at best.

UPDATE: After work tonight I was dropped off and tried starting up my car. It started like it normally would. Does this mean that my starter is giving way and must be replaced? Thank you for your responses thus far. I very much appreciate it.
