Actually, in that press release, you will see that VT scored on an 80-yard touchdown pass in the last couple minutes. So I guess if Auburn would have actually cared at the end of the game, it could have been 16-6. Some tight game there, especially with the miscues the article references.

Auburn deserved at least a share of the title last year.

Get a clue bud; read the stats, watch the games.

you want stats:
VT had more offensive total yards
VT had more first downs
They both tied in turnovers (AU-1 fumble, i int/VT-2 int)
The difference was that AU got it done in the redzone where VT couldn't...and also, time of possession always plays a big role in the 4th Qtr, which was held by AU...
If VT didn't miss a 23 yard field goal, it would have been over for AU...who misses a chipshot in the 4th qtr other than the bills?
Either way AU was never a convincing squad to have a share in the title...It would be like giving Alabama a share in the title, even though they don't have an offensive touchdown all year...what's that all about? The thing about this whole conversation is that I hate VT...I am however a huge fan of cadillac...

Think again...it's all just publicity...

And by the way: C-A-N-E-S, GO CANES!!!

If Division I-AA football can have a playoff then there's no reason why I-A can't either. It's strictly a money issue. There's too much money tied up in the bowl games for the universities and television to want to change to what makes sense. To allow a mathmatical system to determine who the best two teams are in the country is bogus. How often does the perceived top team actually win the title? Not too often. Texas barely beat Ohio State and USC barely beat Notre Dame. A playoff in I-A football would showcase some of the best games and I really don't see why each round of the playoffs couldn't use or keep that particular bowl game.

To me it's simple. It's money and politicis that's keeping I-A from having a playoff. Division I-AA has a 16 team playoff that spans four weeks. There's simply zero reason other than money and politics keeping I-A from doing the same.

I have always thought that they should leave the last game on the schedule open. 2 Weeks before the final week NCAA tell you who you are gonna play. Put all the undefeated teams aginst other undefeated teams. If need be you could make the last 2 weeks open. Would suck trying to plan for a game but a good team will win with or with-out watching videos.

As long as some one beats USC and knocks them out of #1 I will be happy.

Offensive yards: well there is an interesting discussion. 109 of VT's yards came on two plays, 29 on their first TD pass with 6:58 left in the game and 80 on the second 2:01 left. Until VT scored their possessions ended with Punt, Interception, Punt, Downs, Punt, Punt, Punt, Missed FG. In 53:02 minutes of football they gained a whopping 209 yards and scored zero points.

So while you think it was oh so close of an upset, it was really never in doubt after AU scored with 10:39 left in the 3rd. AU spent the entire 4th quarter running out the clock (AU time of possesion: 10:34 or 70%), how else to explain the play selection...
AU rush plays: 18 13 straight to finish the game
AU pass plays: 1
Care to guess the play calling on a drive starting at the VT 39 following an interception with 3:32 remaining? Yep, three straight runs followed by a punt--from the VT 37!! Yeah that *really* sounds like AU was worried about losing.

Would they have beat USC? No one knows, but they, and any undefeated team from a BCS conference, should have had a shot. After all, isn't that "why they play the game?"

I'll agree to disagree...that's cool...pretty much until they change the system, it will always be like this, and someone will always be on the bubble looking in...by the way, no one will remember AU or even OU, as a matter of fact, I forgot they won already...
By the way, 1957...reminds me of the Red Sox, but hey everyone has got to win sometime...

"After all, isn't that "why they play the game?" Yes, in professional football where it's their actual job to play...not college students...the reason football was created in colleges was strictly for business and some entertainment...believe it or not, football came after drinking, baseball, and rowing...I don't think they made too much $$$ off of that...

Me too, the luck of the Irish just kills me. That game shouldn't have been closer than 40 points.
