Just got a new grill and getting ready to let it sit in the acid. Is the best way to separate the grill from the oval by drilling the 12 spots on the back? Is it safe to let the whole piece sit in the acid without taking it apart?

How-to

Drill out the plastic weld spots on the back and take the center piece out before soaking the trim ring.

Usually takes about 2 weeks to completly remove the chrome. I cleaned mine with baking soda and water and then gave it light sanding before priming/painting.

I really don't know.
Just curious, why did you cut the acid with water?

Well I needed just a bit more liquid to cover the grill, so I was reading the bottle and it said about cutting the acid with water for other applications so I gave it a try. It appears to working, because there are parts of the crome that are turning sort of a brown or white color.

It'll work fine, it'll just take longer because you dilluted the acid. But obviously you needed to to cover the grill, unless you have more acid available

I was thinking it may take a few more days to get the chrome off but wasn't sure.

You used enough water to cover the grille, gottcha.

As long as it's changing color, it's working.

Maybe next time I use acid ( ) I should read the bottle. LOL!

Well it looks like the grill is just about finished. It soaked in the acid for only a week and is now completly white. Anybody have an idea on what it will cost to be painted, and also how to secure the black part back to the oval?

Pug...

For securing:

Go to the Aesthetics forum, then click "FAQ - How to - General" and find the "oval grille" how-to by bigwalton.

It details reattaching the grille.
