i hava 1999 ford contour and the timing belt broke and my car has not been fixable since and i have been without since april.it is a 4cylinder with a duel cams. the problem is it will not idle and its running very rich. the guy that has been working on it is abput to give up because he doesn't have a clue what and why its running like it is.my o2 sensors are fine. can someone please tell what is wrong with it,why wont it idle and why is it running rich.i am very desparate and need some advice about this stupid car.he is also open for suggestions also.if anyone knows the cause or how to fix the problem i would be more than glad to give you the name and number of the mechanic to contact to help with this problem.

It is possible that timing of valves is incorrect because timing belt has been set up incorrectly and crank and camshafts are not synchronized as they should be. I would suggest a second mechanics opinion.

Running rich you say? Have you looked at;

* the thermostat
* the temperature sensor/sender

Possibly the PCM getting a "cold" engine signal and adjusting the fuel mixture rich to compensate. Both items are inexpensive and easy to replace. Good luck.

Welcome. . Is the check engine light (yellow, CEL) on? Even if it is not, get it scanned (free service) at Advance or Autozone and post the codes. As previously posted, it could be the ECT or thermostat. Actually, it could be a lot of things but if you post the CEL codes, we would be able to give some more suggestions.

If it is indeed running rich, below could be some of the causes but we (you) really won't know until you get the CEL scanned and posted. and anything you do prior to that would just be a "shotgun approach".

P0172 - System Too Rich (Bank 1) The Adaptive Fuel Strategy continuously monitors fuel delivery hardware. The code sets when the adaptive fuel tables reach a lean calibrated limit. Fuel System:
· Excessive fuel pressure
· Leaking/contaminated fuel injectors
· Vapor recovery system concern
Base Engine:
· Oil overfill
· Cam timing concern
· Low cylinder compression
· Excessive engine wear
Powertrain Control System:
· PCM concern
Induction System:
· MAF contamination

P0175 - System Too Rich (Bank 2) Same as DTC P0172, but Bank 2. See Possible Causes for DTC P0172
