While the engine is running unplug the MAF sensor. The computer will go into limp mode. If the engine idles OK the IAC is working - problem is in the loop somewhere. If there are still major vacuum leaks the engine will idle poorly because it will throw the O2 sensors off. I have found leaks in the stem of the EGR valve and the gasket, the o-rings on top of the intake manifold, and the fuel rail to intake manifold seals. Best thing to do is buy every seal and gasket, yank the intakes off and start from the engine and work your way up and out.

Thanks for the tips!

my car is doing simmilar things. When i am stoped at a light or something it drops to like 400 rpm. I have to give it a little gas so that it doesnt die. I have also been driving and all the sudden it will just die out of no where.
does this sound like it might be the same problem or is it something else?

Yes, clean the IAC valve.
IAC cleaning
from Ray's UIM/LIM how to in Duratec Maintenance how to.
"Replacing the IAC gasket:
(From IAC faq)
Over time, the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve becomes sticky due to buildup from the EGR and PCV systems. It can stick partially open such that idle quality is adversely affected, and engine RPM's will not drop below 1500. For a while, blipping the throttle will restore normal idle, but this only works for so long.
The fix is to remove the IAC valve by unbolting the two 8mm bolts that hold it on and disconnected the wiring plug. If you are careful enough, replacement of the gasket will not be necessary. The gasket costs less than US $1.00, so it is no tragedy if you destroy it. Once the valve is off, spray it out with some carb/intake cleaner and make sure any gunky residue is gone. Reattach, and you are done. It is a lot cheaper than a new IAC, which runs around US $70. Note: Ford claims the IAC cannot be cleaned, but this is not true in my experience." Ray.

Mine does that too. If you have the throttle hang fix that is your problem. I just live with it. If you have the th fix take the cap out and I bet it idles normal at start up

The IAC valve is different for a Duratec and Zetec. In addition, IIRC different years for a Duratec (SVT and non-SVTn Duratec were same for the same year) had different ones. Maybe 95 to early 98 were same, and late 98 to 2000 were same. Check with Bill Jenkins at www.teamfordparts.com to be sure you get the correct one for your SVT.

I just went throught this. I cleaned mine, put it back on, and I think in cleaning it I killed it. The car would not idle, it would just die. It was really bad in the cold. I ended up replacing mine. Hopefully it would work for you.
