This is on my wifes Taurus but people here seem pretty helpful. - We were driving today and the car stunk. I got out and saw smoke coming from the rear wheel hub. I'm under the impression that we need to get the bearings replaced ? Any ideas here ?

Yeah, I may have to agree on this one, maybe seized or the wife left the E-Brake on (pretty common with women to do this, no offense ladies ) I have heard of women doing this and got home and the rear brakes smoking like crazy and the tires were bald.
Maybe it is just seized up, does the car seem like it's dragging/pulling down the road?

Yes ! It was the damn E-Brake. I put it on to take the front wheel off and forgot to release it. Then my wife drove it without realizing it was still on. Thanks

if it was smoking THAT badly, you might check in to the glazing that may have happened on that/those pads, as well as do a complete fluid flush. If the fluid boiled (smoking can tend to lead to that!! lol) then it is not useful fluid any more.

Doh! It was you that left it on by mistake (well kinda her faul too, she didn't realize it was on) Let's just blame it on the wife here, cuz you know she did not realize it lol. Yep, told you women have a good tendicy (sp?) of doing that, when I was with my mom once, she had to set the e-brake on her vehicle once and told me to remind her to release it when we got back. Most women usually think, "as long as it runs, it's ok," I'm sure A LOT of guys on here can't argue with that one. Also take Ray's advice, and check the brake fluid, it maybe boiled.

I'd flush the fluid and make sure the tire isn't flat-spotted, and that the pads have enough life left. However, I don't know if I'd bother pulling the pads to check for glazing on the rear. They just don't do much on that car, so it's not a safety thing, in my mind.

To elaborate, once it boils it has the moisture from boiling in it. Moisture(water) doesn't work well as a brake fluid and causes braking degredation.

Well the car doesn't have an E-brake light on the dash. I know plenty of males who don't know crap about cars also. I heard in Europe you need to know a little about how a car works when you get your lisence which makes sense because of safety.
Would you want a wife who is a gearhead anyway ?
