Just noticed this but everytime I touch the gas pedal while coasting i hear a hiss behind the heater controls area. it does it for about a second and then stops. Release the gas and touch it again it hisses for a second and then its gone.

Normal or a vacuum leak?

vacuum leak, most likely.. your HVAC controls all work correctly, and as strongly, and in the right locations as normal?

I would pull the radio (or look behind the console.. radio is easier) and look for the leak before it becomes a break.

If it sounds like the hiss you hear when you turn your heater controls to defrost, then it could be this...

Could that hiss by acceleration like he said below here?

So that little controller like you showed in the link you posted if that has a leak it can also hiss by the accelerator? I know I hear that hissing noise if you move the controller. BTW good info on the link

Yeh i'm not getting full defrost (Not much airflow to the windshield) The thing is i can only hear that hiss while i'm coasting and blipping the throtle. Removing the radio and checking the lines didn't reveal much (no obvious breaks or damadge) and with it all apart an in full view, starting the motor revealed no obvious leaks. It's kinda hard to drive and check for the hissing at the same time. I'm wondering if the valvle that switches the flap could be leaking, but why am i only hearing it when blipping the gas while driving and not stationary?

Blipping the gas results in a sudden/temporary decrease in manifold vacuum -- opening the throttle valve thus tending to equalize the pressure/vacuum on both sides of the throttle valve. At stationary, manifold vacuum is maximal -- the engine is under minimal load and the volume of air at atmospheric pressure that is let into the intake is also minimal. So if there's a leak in the HVAC vacuum motor, it will be magnified when there's not a lot of vacuum "to spare" to 'cover up' the leak, i.e. circumstances when there is low manifold vacuum.

I don't have my Electrical & Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual handy, but someone more knowledgeable can tell us off-hand what kind of vacuum reserve system the Contiques have. I don't remember seeing a vacuum reserve canister but then again I'm still learning about my Mystique.
