So I've heard on the news the last fews days about Canadians being stranded in Florida and Cuba. Most of them left Canada when there was warnings and advisories for them not to go. So then they were complaining that the government didn't do enough to get them out. News says that there was planes, specifically to get them out, left Cuba and Florida near empty. I would like to hear other people's opinions on this. I personally think that it was there responibility to get themselves out. Until I heard that 'Ottawa' was trying to get them out, I never would have thought that would have even happened. I would never have thought to rely on 'Ottawa' to get me back from my vaction. I was/am pretty mad that people, that are now coming back and are pissed at the government for not doing enough to get them out of THEIR vacation that they wanted to go on. Going down their during huracane season is their choice/risk.

I'm in the same boat of thinking.
People choose where to go for their vacations. No one forced them to take a vacation deal to a resort during a time when it's typically known as hurricane season.
Funny thing is how the media is wanting to pick this up and running with it.

People have known for months that the weather was bad, look at the weather channel and you can see that one storm was following the other. If you go on a vacation somewear during hurrican season you get what you deserve.

It's their risk, they should get themsleves outI was pissed at the guy in Mexico on the news talking about this. Think of it this way, most flights to Mexico are Wed. - Sat., When did the Hurricane hit??? on a Saturday!!!!!! Tell me the Hurricane wasn't on it's way when he left for Mexico. Now if it was a war that was comming, I would expect the Gov't to get me out. from Sunquests Tours web siteLAST Rescue flight from CANCUN!
Please note, a last rescue flight from CANCUN to Toronto is being organized by the Canadian tour operators via Air Transat.
Depart from CANCUN Friday October 28, 2005 at 12:45pm (local time)
Arrive in Toronto Friday October 28, 2005 at 17:30pm (local time)
Passengers in Reef Playacar and any Air Only Passengers that are in Playa del Carmen must be at the Reef Playacar before 7:30 AM.
Any passenger located in Cancun must make their way to the Oasis America for a shuttle pick up at 9:00 AM, please advise to be EARLY. Wait the Last Flight out is on a Friday.... Wonder if that guy landed on the Friday before it hit!

Sure it's the tourist's fault for going when the warnings were there. However if he or she is already there, the holiday company can't just say "fahgedaboudid", cancel flights from there and not reschedule ones to get them back. Ottawa shouldn't have to send flights or anything like that but should ensure the holiday companies follow some sort of guidlines about abandoning people ... whether those guidlines exist already or not.

I think you missed what I said. That the gov't shouldn't be responsible to get them back. Sure the tour operators are. Heck they had to get me home when Canada 3000 folded while I was away.
If all the flights are full coming back how do you get them back? You need to send more flights. However with a Huricane coming, not to many pilots/airlines are going to want to fly there until afterwards.
The reason I posted the Sunquest part was to show how they are saying this is it. You miss it your really on your own. Now without power and if your in a remote secure place how do you find out....... It's not like Sunquest is on every street corner in Mexico.

Another factor was the airports. Since power was lost, the airports were literally in the dark. No runway lights, and no towers to help the planes in. The pilots had to land planes the old-fashioned way...by hand and know-how.
So...try and land/take off just with basic radio communication and using pilot judgment with a Boeing or Air Bus at his hands.
