Suppose stealth of sound was an important factor to someone, how would one go about modifying his or her car?

Well tuned car (no backfiring). Good exhaust (no loud sounds). Good rolling tires.

Well yes, but how muuch of a gain will any exhaust net on its own?
Hmmm...maybe a better question would be, what's the quietest way to 200 whp?

I don't like quiet. I like to hear my car. Now I can really hear it with a free flowing 2.5" muffler-less catback SVT style quasi-dual set up. My god,it sounds absolutely beautiful. Makes me actually turn my stereo down so I can listen to the car instead. If you want quiet, leave it stock.

...better yet..do your headers, high flow cat, larger piping etc,but get a large resonator, like a Magnaflow or something, and I hate to say it,but keep the stock muffler. It'll rob you a little bit of power, but if you really want quiet, that may be the way you have to go. I just say it'll rob you power because your whole exhaust will be open and free flowing, probably through 2.5" piping, and then all of a sudden, the escaping gases hit a wall and reduce into 2 1/8" piping into a restrictive factory muffler. However,if you do a full exhaust, you will see large gains in power,so using the stock muffler may not kill it that much.
When I first hacked up my exhaust,I have a Ractive fart can that I had laying around,so I figured what the hell and put it on. It was really quiet with the stock resonator left in place. After I removed the resonator,it was alot louder, and much more to my liking. Look into doing all the exhaust upgrades, but fiddle around with keeping the stock muffler or resonator if you really, really want it to be quiet.

I'm with you. The only stock portion of my exhaust: the tips. Because of the headers, mine is a little bit louder when you stand next to it idling, but when not stomping it, it's pretty close to passing for stock. You can get resonators and mufflers that perform without unnecessarily advertising it.
I still get to have a loud car when I want to.
And yes, a 3L would be even better.
