Well, I've owned my SVT since 1998 and it has never seen snow. This year I will be forced to drive it through the Michigan winter. I have a set of Kelly Z-rated directional tires on it and was wondering how crappy it is going to handle in the snow this winter. If I could pick up some winter gear (rims and tires) for it, I might go that route, but I don't want to compromise the look too much (ie, putting steelies on it). What would you guys suggest I do? Thanks in advance.

I had a '98 TDI Beetle with performance all seasons on it. Now there's an oxymoron!
I dropped steelies and Blizzaks on it. The thing drove like it was on dry payment in ice and slush all winter. Looked a little off but, they aren't on that long really. Besides who wants to wreck you're good rims from the salt and other garbage on the winter roads?

Get new tires. It'll also be easier to just get steelies. Cheaper too since you can get a more common tire size. The reason I say steelies is so you can keep your good wheels good, not to mention you won't have to go through having tires mounted and balanced, just to do it again at the end of winter.

Where would I go to get a set of steelies? Junk yard?

I drove through SE-MI's last winter with bald back tires and made it just fine.

get steelies, but then get some nice looking wheel covers (NOT spinners!) These cars love the slop. You'll have a fun winter for sure, as long as the sight of slushy snow and salt residue on your car don't get you upset.

Terrible, though I've never used snow tires. I will likely be getting some this year, as I don't want to risk it again. Last winter I had Kumho Supras and it was aweful. There was less than an inch of snow on top of a thin layer of ice on my flat driveway and I could not back out.

If ya get new tires from Tirerack, then you can get the whole package (they'll be mounted and balanced when ya get them too). Or you can try a junkyard, or check the classifieds here.

A good set of all season are ok. Blizzacks would be the best.
Few winters ago, I ordered RE950's but a storm hit before they arrived. It took me four hours to swap tires the day after the snow hit. 3 of that was getting out of my complex and into the bay from the unplowed parking lot. Once the new tires were on I could do circles in the parking lot with ease.
Beyond 4 inches the SVT GFX start to drag and plow but the car goes fine as long as you drive carefully.

I ran all-season tires on my 99SVT thru a PA winter. The car was good, but I was still scared most snowy days (from other drivers also). This year I'm going all out snows just to make myself feel better. Scott
