Good morning all;

I discovered a flat (Front, Driver side) yesterday and brought the tire to good old Walmart to have it patched up.

I was informed that the tire was not patchable, but since it was under warranty, it wouldn't cost me much to get a new tire replaced. I asked about if it was necessary to change the second tire too; he said that no, they change only 1 all the time...

However, I have always been under the impression that changing only one tire "is not good" but I can't seem to find anything that backs my argument up.

The other tire still at 9/16 tread depth...so is that 1/8th of an inch enought to make a difference?

Thanks,
Denis

That last statement answered your question. You will not see any diffrence, really. Becuase you will NEVER have 100% even wear between all four tires, changing just teh one tire at that point is fine. Now, chaning a tire with the other three at say, 3/16" thread left, not so good.

What I have usually done is, prior to replacing the one bad tire, I measured the tread depth of each tire, found out which corner was reciving the most wear, and put the new tire there.

I have found in ALL of my rides that the passenger side front tire is always wearing about 1/8" faster than the others, probably do to many more right hand turns and what not.

It should make a difference, as long as the tire is the same as the rest. I have done it several time with the warranty that I have thru Sears and have had no problems.

I've done the same thing many times and it's okay. You may find a small change for a while, but the wear usually evens out somewhat from my experience.

Rotate the front tires to the back tires, and you should be fine. (I did this when I had my Chevy Celebrity at 160k miles).

For my Contour at 45 K miles, I replaced two new ones (had an extra few bucks this time ) and kept the good one as a spare. Came in handy 7 months later when I blew out the passenger rear tire when I hit a steel inlet curb.
