In the Early 90's I had a buick with 2 10" mtx speakers MTX amp crossover 4 speakers the works.

But What I need to know is awile back I bought awesome car speakers 6x9 like $199 magnet was so heavy and when I hooked then directly to my 35 what a chanel head unit they sucked because the head unit lacked power the factory was actually louder and better. that was intil I amped the expensive pair.

So now it's 2005 and i'm looking to replace my contour head unit and speakers no amps should I just buy like $40 car speakers or is it better to pay for the better one's PS are they really better if they don't have a amp

if you have a 50w per ch HU and your not planning to use a extern 4ch amp to power your speaker you should avoid getting too powerfull speakers, like over 50 or 60 RMS cause depend of the HU they will have tendency to distortion and they will not be at their optimal quality.

Depend which kind of sound you like, if its bass that you want, dont spend so much on speaker, get something like pioneer 6X8 without extern amps and get a amp/subwoofer, it will more worth it.
