russle 3.0l did it with an atx but had it built and had a high stall converter in it. he later did an mtx swap

There are a few 3L swaps running ATX's. It is possible.

I'm sure the stock atx could not handle the added power from the 3L...

The atx in the 3L escape/Tribute is a CD4E. It can handle it, however a trans cooler would probably be considered a must have.

there are a few cougar owners who run 3L's with the CD4e tranny, i think the contour is the same... As stated just put on a nice tranny cooler. It will bolt up, and it can handle the power

it can with a good cooler and no additional mods, if you start modifying things then reliability goes down.
