I am in the process of trying to purchase a rebuilt CD4E for a 98 Contour SE. One rebuilder must know the TAG NO (F83P-CA) and the second rebuilder doesnt seem to even know what a TAG NO is however, they assure me that they can provide the correct transmission.
What is the significance of the TAG NO on the CD4E transaxle? Can the second rebuilder provide the correct transaxle without the TAG NO?

THANKS

Unisis12 may be better able to answer this but from what I understand, having the tag number will tell the rebuilder exactly which transmission you now have. Without the tag, they must try to guess based on the year, model, engine, etc.

Sometimes it makes a big difference, sometimes it doesn't.

Here's the little bit of information I have on the ID Tag...

"When looking at the ID tag, on the tranny, I have no information on the first row of numbers. The second row contains the model number(first 4 digits to the left) and assy number(the next six to right, ####-##). This is the number that you gave in your above post. Next is the bar code followed by one long number that is actually two numbers in one. The last four digits of this long number is the build date of the tranny. Everything before that makes up the serial number.

Sorry that I am not much help here. Only advice I have, is stay with the same build number and as close to your current build date if at all possible. Only other info I can add here is that the model number will only denote 4 and 6 cylinder models. "

As for the location of the tag, crawl under the car and look up at the bottom on the valve body cover (sideways mounted pan on the front of the tranny). You will see a label stuck to the pan. You can't miss it, not only because it has a bar code on it, but it is white.
