Drove all week with petcock (drain plug) 1/2 way in. It would not budge at all! Ordered a new one at Auto Zone for $4. Bought needle long nosed lock pliers. Today I jacked the car up and was ready for combat! Just to see, I put a slip joint plier on that bad boy and was able to snug it all the way! I will NEVER touch that thing again. Have a new one to hang on my garage trophy wall to remind me of all the dumb auto designers out there who give us home mechanics a fit!

Was easily able to take off small hose that goes to heater to drain & refill system with fresh coolant!

Thanks for everyone's help!

Thanks for bringing back repressed memories. GOD I hate that thing. Way to go Ford, making a screw head out of soft squishy plastic is just plain brilliant.

I battled it on my then-girlfriend's '96 Zetec Mystique when I flushed the coolant in an faild attempt to make the thing not run so hot.

I hope my Duratec's radiator has a better design, I'm kinda afraid to look.

Ford got it right on the '93 Cougar I had. It had a little wingnut-like thing you could turn easily by hand, and underneath was a fitting for a drain hose. Looked and worked like a little tiny faucet. I don't know why they quit using that design.. Was too easy and convenient I guess!

I drained my coolent on my 99 mistique about 2 years ago, don't recall a big problem with radiator plug, but this does not appear to drain all of the coolant. there appears to be a plug on the back side of the block right at the end of the starter motor near the freeze plug that looks like a block drain so one can get all of the coolant out. most any motor I have seen has a block drain plug. am going to change my coolant soon and am going to remove this plug to see if it is a water jacket drain, or oil gallery drain. any one out there know for sure which it is?

if you are referring to what I think you are.. it is the ECT sensor.. which you can pull to back flush the block...
