Hello. First I want to say I appreciate you guys having this website. Forgive me for my stupid question, I did search for my symptoms but probably can't navigate well here yet. My 1996 mystique 2.0 is making a whining noise from the automatic transaxle. Ive changed the fluid 2 times(trying to get as much out as i can), then added lucas trans fix, but it still makes the noise. The noise changes with rpm's and I'm afraid it is going out. Can anybody please tell me whats up? If the trans needs to come out, how involved is it?

Welcome. Is the Check Engine Light on? Scan for codes and post. How did you determine it was the ATX which was giving the sound?

First, thank you, I really need a hand here The noise I hear definitely is coming from drivers side of engine, sounds like a turbine kind of sound, and Im assuming nothing else on that side of motor spins that fast, and she won't hold overdrive all the time. I'm not seeing a MIL just see the revs go up and overdrive off light comes on, goes off. These are intermittent, although the noise is almost always there. SOMETIMES ( rarely) I can turn ignition off , then restart and noise will go away. Any ideas?

Any ideas?
For $40, this is too cheap not to try

If this does't work, try the Turbine shaft speed sensor (TSS) or maybe the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor first.

For the Zetec, the ECT sensor is the one on top of the thermostat housing, in between the oil filler cap and the resonator. There is another one sensor below that which is the coolant temperature gauge sender. The gauge sender sends the signal to the temperature gauge in the instrument panel.

I just started the vehicle to move it to work area. The whining was there immediately at startup, in park, and persists in all positions. I will report back asap. in the meantime, any head scratching would be appreciated. P.S. it is Small town Sunday here, can't get any sensors of any kind, but would like wife to drive to work tomorrow, so she doesn't have to drive my hot rod Mounty. HELP!

You say that it is louder on the driver's side. It sounds like your atx oil pump. Do this, take a long screwdriver and place it on the end of the atx that shows under the drivers side wheel well. Have someone start up the car and while it is making this noise, please it against the end of the atx and up to your ear. If it is the oil pump going out, you should hear the noise very strongly.
I would check the vss gear and see if that looks fine. I don't think this would be it but you need to check it.
Just reread your earlier posts....
Since the whine is in all gears and park, I wouldn't bother with checking the vss.
I suspect, oil pump, torque converter and or atx bearings....
In all cases you will need a rebuild. In my book, I think it is simpler to pull engine and atx as one unit instead of trying to pull just the atx.....
With the overdrive led flashing, you should be getting some codes while the engine is running, can you get these? This would narrow things down abit.

I checked the coolant sensors with an ohm meter, and they are all right ( yes I'm going to the effort)lol. The noise is internal ( I used my stethescope once I gained good access) Could it be the vss gear ( thnx bob) going to check it now. I have a chilton's manual But I am having a hard time locating the TSS right now. be back in a minute

I don't think it's a sensor guys. It is my torque converter whining I believe, although I still haven't located the TSS Or VSS I beleive my sensors are working good. Wish I had a POS sensor when I bought this car. Anyway, In the last 11 months I've repaired head gasket ( didn't enjoy) timing belt only( more to come) Battery Alternator Timing belt again ( this time with pulleys) now don't get me wrong. I have a 347 stroker in my Mercury Mountaineer, which I did myself. Since that however I injured my back, which makes it difficult to bend. I still like working on my cars, But this car is getting to me. From what I see of changing a trans in this mystique I don't think it is worth it. I feel better now. Where is the tss sensor located, and could it be physically touching the torque converter causing the noise?

You mentioned that the noise happens in park. If that is true the vss would not be turning thus no noise. The TSS can be reached under the drivers side wheel well where you checked the case for noise. You should see a wire going to the sensor there. It is on back of the oil pump facing in your driver's side wheel well. I am assuming that the noise changes with engine speed, If so the books states:
Torque Converter Componenets Fluid Level low pump caviatation Oil Pump Assembly Engine Drive Accessories (Like belt, pulley tensioner, etc worth a check)!!! Oil Cooler Tubes grounding out Flywheel Inspection cover ( bottom of trans under car, is it bent, etc)
