i was at a salvage yard and noticed that there was a contour or a mystique with traction control sitting there. is this something that all cars are wired for and some just dont have? i figured it would be nice for winter driving. so how big of a pain would this be to install, if even possible? thanks in advance.

It may be possible to add it, though if you don't have ABS there's no way (without also installing ABS system). You'd most likely have to replace the PCM as well.

what does traction control have to do with abs? i thought it just killed timing when you had tire slippage.

traction control pulses the brakes when it senses wheel slippage. the pcm monitors wheel slippage with the same wheel speed sensors that the abs does

in pre 98 contours the TC used the throttle, mechanical motor, and the abs to control wheel spin depending on the speed
in post 98 cars the TC used the ignition and possible the abs to control the wheel spin
if you have the wires and have a car with abs it might be possible. you will need the pcm from the car also as if you don't have TC it might not be in the program

I looked into adding Traction COntrol to my 98 CSVT, and a dealership told me it would be down right IMPOSSIBLE to add teh feature. Between the wiring, the programmed PCS and abs tweaks, I was told it would never work. Well, never is a harsh word, but by the time you got everyhting needed, installed, programmed.. you migh taswell buy a Lincoln LS V8 with traction control.

i just didnt know if it was one of those things where all of a type of vehicle came with it wired but some didnt have the actual setup. like it could be easily added as an opiton.
i guess ill just throw some sandbags in the trunk and drive with the stock tires on during winters.

Sandbags in teh trunk.... you do know the car is front wheel drive, right?! Sandbags in teh trunk will do you A LOT of harm. In all my front wheeled drive cars, I removed EVERYTHING out of the trunk (spare and all). Th eless weight in the rear and more up front gives you better traction.

I suppose if you don't know how to drive.. Why woudl you want the front wheels to have to pull the cars weight more than it has to in the snow? that would = slippage.
Doesn't the tilt-a-whirl demonstrate the same concept, really. When you all squish together in the back, car flings aorund faster. If you all scoot to the front and hold your weight closer to teh front, less rotation. I dunno, that idea just cmae from my bum... makes since in my world. join me in my world Ray...we are waiting.
Ray... have you ever seen snow?
