Hi,
I am new here nad have been lurking for a couple of days. I have a 98 Contour GL with 178k that runs very well but will barely pull itself 300 ft in drive or reverse. It also makes a "whirring" noise for the first couple of minutes when started. Will a CD4E from a 99 cougar bolt to a 98 Contour GL? Can anyone tell me for sure Yes or No and why it can or can't.
I would like to put a used tranny in for now and rebuild the original myself.
Thanks

not 100% possitive but with the MTX you can not interchange between the V6 and I4 as the bell housings are different, so i don't see why that wouldn't hold for the ATX also

No, it won't work ... different size Torque converter and different bellhousing ... if you have a 4 cylinder car, you need a 4 cylinder CD4E and if you have a 6 cylinder car, you will need the 6 cylinder CD4E.

Can the bell housing and torque converter be swapped?

The bell housing is part of the trans case. You would have to swap the entire case which would essentually be a trans rebuild.
