While I was a city boy, I drove on all season tires all the time. Now that I've moved out to the boonies, I'm looking to get some winter tires.
So I was just wondering, how many times, or how often, can you remove a set of tires from your rims, and then later put them back on such as with summer/winter tires as the seasons change? I know it would be a better idea to just get a second set of rims, but I just don't want to spend the extra cash. Is it a bad idea to mount and remount tires on this kind of schedule? Will it damage them?

I've had my winter tires mounted and balanced 4 times since I've owned my SVT (total of 8 mount/balance) and had no issues .

if there careful and clean the rim well then they should seal fine every time
if there sloppy and dont clean the rim or tear the tire changing them all the time then you could have issues

Its not necessarily a bad idea, but you'll actually save some money by buying some cheap wheels. Keep in mind that you'll be mounting and balancing twice a year.

You can do it like a bajillion times. Real problem you'd run into is if you don't drive a lot and the tires starting getting old. The unmounting/mounting will cause stress on older tires. The word old depends on the tire, where/how you use it,etc. Old can be as little as 4 years.

Get a second set or rims for your snows. 14" aluminum rims work great. The tires are cheaper and give you better gas mileage and snow traction tht 15" or bigger rims.

I don't have to do this in my climate, but just how expensive is a set of steel winter wheels? I seems like you could buy a set of wheels for what it would cost to mount and remount a couple of times.
The last time I bought a conventional wheel at a tire shop for a full size spare, it was only $20.00. I'm sure that they are less in a wrecking yard.

can't be that much, my family has picked up two sets of 99/00 SE Sport wheels, the 8 spoke ones, for $100 for a set of 4, just have to look for the deals

another thing to consider is the climate. alum. rims will tend to leak air more with extreme flucuations in outdoor temp. at least we can get that here. one day it is 15+ C, the next it can be -10 C. I rarely have to top up the air in my steels, even after they sit in the garage all summer.
