I have a 1998 2.5l with the CD4E transmission. It will drive fine for two or three days, then the rpms climb and I lose power. I realized that it is shifting in and out of overdrive. For a while I could turn off the overdrive and it ran okay, but now it doesn't matter. it pops in and out at will and is slamming very hard back into overdrive. I find no TSB's and Identifix does not list any recurring problems with this. I think I have a valve body / shift solenoid problem, but they should set a check engine light. The light does not come on. Any ideas? It has gotten to be almost undriveable.

I'd check the following:
1. Fluid level.... 2. Replase TSS (Turbine Speed Sensor)
If you still have the problem, for 35 dollars purchase a transgo shift correction kit and install it as SOON as possile. Once installed, I'd perform a power flush.
At this point if you still have a problem, I'd check for any codes.....
If no codes, I'd check your engine coolant temp sensor..not the one for the gauge but the one that sends signal to PCM for controlling transmission shift, etc....

Hey Bob, are you referring to the TFT? Transmission Fluid Temp sensor? If so, that is part of the solenoid block, IIRC, and has to be changed with the block.
I would follow BT though, go with the fluid first. You will find that it will fix a lot of things. If it gets better, after the first drain and fill, then wait a day or so and do it again. You might find that your car comes right back to life.
If not... let us know and we'll help ya out.

Hey Phillip,
No I'm referring to the ECT sensor. The name escaped me in the previous post. ATX shifting is controlled in part, from info received from ECT on engine temperature. This is compared to the ATX temp sensor and adjustments are made from what I have read.

I flushed the fluid first thing, no change. I did check for codes even if the CEL wasn't on. No codes. The TSS should set a hard code, but this is a Ford, and they are notorious for not setting. The ECT was mentioned, too. I am scanning with a Vtronix Mastertech and I can follow the data stream. The ect is reading correctly. However, I have not had someone drive the car at speed with the scanner hooked up to catch it in the act. I will try that this weekend and get a snapshot of the data stream when acting up. Thanks for the tip! Any suggestions are helpful.
