My Bank has just lost a customer. Not that they care. Basically, I�m sick of their incompetence. It all started 3 or 4 months after I opened my account when I started having problems balancing my checkbook.

I went to them with several errors that were in my favor, and told them that they had screwed up somewhere. All they can tell me is that the computer says that�s what your balance is. There are deposits into my account that I didn�t make, etc. I know there is a problem. Eventually, they debit my account one month for the deposits I didn�t make, and my checkbook balances fine. This never happens again.

Several months later, I got a hotel room while traveling. When I get my statement, they double charged me for it. I remember watching the person scan the card one time and only one time. So I went to the bank and had them look up when the charges were made. They were made within 1 second of each other, obviously a computer error. They again couldn�t say anything but, that�s what the computer says. I call corporate, and they admit it was a mistake and fix it. All is fine, and this never happens again.

Several months after that, I wrote a check. The check was cashed; I had the check returned to me by my bank. Three months after that, there was the same damn check coming off my account. I mean it was the exact same amount, same check number and everything. I again go to the bank. They bring up the scanned copies of the check and see that they are identical, and obviously a mistake was made. This time they call corporate and get it fixed. Again, first, last, and only time it happens.

Now this brings us to my most recent problem. There is a man with a name similar to mine that lives down the street from me back home. He recently moved down the street, and when he went to get his address changed at the bank, they changed mine instead. I noticed the mistake, went to the bank and had it corrected. A month later, I try to buy something at crutchfield.com, and they refuse my order. I call them up to ask why, and they tell me my billing info doesn�t match my bank�s info for my debit card. I call the bank, and they have the guy down the street�s address on my account again. I have them change the info back. The transaction goes through. I then decide to test something. I need my SSN, card number, account number and mother�s maiden name to change my PIN or internet banking password, right? I wonder what I need to change my address and phone number. I call them up and ask, all I need is to give them my first and last name and zip code.

What dumbass thought up that system? Who would have thought there could be people with similar names in a zip code. They can�t keep our accounts straight because every time one of us gets the wrong address, we go and change it, but because the bank is going by our names and zip codes, not our account numbers, they can�t differenciate between the two of us. They keep all the transactions between us straight because those go by account number and card number, but they can�t keep the billing info between us straight at all.

I don�t have time to deal with this type of [censored] anymore. I can�t be getting purchases rejected and having to call the bank everytime I order something. Since they can�t do any better than that, I�m going somewhere else.

BTW, this isn�t some small bank, it is Fifth Third.

It sounds like that bank has some serious software problems. You are wise to bail.

Those are too many mistakes to have to put up with.
The address issue is frickin scary.
Hopefully that other guy doesn't catch on and try some crap.

Good luck finding a better bank.

What bank is this?

Ive been through a couple banks in the past few years. The first bank I had was never open. The second one had rude tellers, and their online service never worked (and they never fixed it, after 4 complaints).

Now im with a credit union, and couldnt be happier. They are all over my nuts giving me good service, and awesome deals on stuff. Their online service is flawless. They have a direct deposit program.

You should look into a credit union, they are non profit, and when you open an account, you claim your share of the company. Its all owned by the people . Generally, because the people own the company, the CU is more than willing to work for its customers!

Now keep in mind I'm not excusing the other problems that you had, but this particular problem is not usually the fault of your bank, but the fault of either (a) the merchant's CC system or (b) the merchant's bank. How do I know? I work for a rather large bank in their disputes department and see these all the time. If you had access to all the systems, you could see both transactions post on the CC's system (i.e. VisaNet) which is prior to your bank being notified of the debit; therefore it is external to your account.

This particular problem is very common even though I've never had it happen to me. They almost always resolve in favor of the cardholder.

However, I don't bank with the bank I work for due to issues I had with them about a decade ago. I use two banks - Wells Fargo for personal accounts and Compass for my (upstart) business account.

Why am I not surprised...

I had an account with Fifth Third when I lived in Florida. When I moved away, I withdrew my money and closed the account.

Almost a year later, I went to deposit a check to my Chase Bank account, and was told it was locked. I spoke to the branch manager, who informed me that I showed up in ChexSystems as owing $180 to 5/3. Which meant they saw me as a risk (even though my Chase account was in completely good standing and has never once been overdrawm or anything!!) so they closed my account. While it was being closed, I couldn't make any deposits or withdrawals. It took almost a month to get a check from them for the money I had in there, BTW.

I call 5/3, and it turns out that they had no record of me cancelling the account. A $5 debit for a usenet server subscription that I forgot to cancel hit the account, then overdraft fees started piling on. Since I had moved and they didn't have my new address, I knew nothing of any of this.

It took a week and about 20 phone calls to their customer service line and the branch where I had the account in order to get it straightened out. They removed me from ChexSystems, but I stopped using Chase after that ordeal. Having my account locked down and my money in limbo for almost a month because of a completely different bank's screwup was one of the most infurating experiences I've ever had.

Think of joining your local credit union. Most big banks cater to businesses so the small guys get trampled over.

I switched out of RBC cause I finally asked why I'm paying $4 to have access to my money.

After joining a big CU here, I've never been happier. I've paid not one cent since whereas I'd have accumulated a wack of fee's from my old bank.

The plus side too is most CU's are non-profit, and it's a nice feeling to know that any profits are distributed back to the community instead of some big bank execs who are already wealthy to begin with.
